Rhubarb root Holsteiner blut 1
Rhubarb Holsteiner blut bare root
Extremely prolific German variety, this rhubarb produces sharp red stems when well established in a sunny - semi-shaded area.
Planting the root:
Remove plants from the packaging as soon as possible. Plant the root outside in a sunny well-drained area. Leave plenty of space around as the plant will reach over 1 meter wide.
Dig a 30cm hole deep and wide, and place the roots 40cm apart - Recover with enriched compost and make sure to leave the crown (base) above the soil. Water well.
Harvest:
Cut the leaves once they are well developed and open with a 30cm long stem. Roots can be planted in large pots as well and after 5 years, the main root can be divided into small ones to give you new plants.
Winter protection:
Rhubarb is a hardy perennial plant and should give you a large number of stems from early spring to late summer.
Protect from frost by mulching or using a straw. If potted, you can bring it inside your greenhouse for protection.
